31 Scriptures To Pray Against Addiction

31 Scriptures To Pray Against Addiction is a compilation of Scriptures I prayed while my daughter was caught up in heroin addiction.

The image shows a mousetrap with something in it, once the mouse is caught it leads to death. The same principle applies to addiction, if not set free by Christ, it will lead to death.

Except for drug, alcohol, and nicotine addiction, people can be addicted to a lot of other things like pharmaceutical drugs, gambling, gaming, pornography, shopping, texting, social media, food, and many other things.

In my opinion as prayer warriors, we must ask God to show us what specific areas He wants us to pray for that person.

Three important things to pray for people caught up in addiction:
  • That God will draw them close to Him and that they will be saved.
  • That Jesus will make them free because then they will be free indeed (John 8:36).
  • For them to admit they have a problem and really have the desire to be helped. (No one can be helped if they don’t want to be helped.)

If you are a close friend or relative of the person you are praying for then I will advise you to ask others to pray for you as well.

Whatever your situation might be, whether you pray for yourself or someone else, I pray that the Lord will meet you at your point of need.

May You clearly hear the voice of the Holy Spirit ministering to You while reading through these beautiful Scriptures.

1. Abide In Christ

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

John 15:5

2. Above All, We Can Ask Or Think

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Ephesians 3:20

3. Abstain From Fleshly Lusts

“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul”

1 Peter 2:11

4. Alive To God

“Likewise, you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 6:11

5. Ask Others To Pray For You

“And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

James 5:15-16

6 Be Free Indeed

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

John 8:36

7. Call Upon God In Truth

“The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,
To all who call upon Him in truth.
He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;
He also will hear their cry and save them.”

Psalm 145:18-19

8. Cast Your Burden On The Lord

“Cast your burden on the Lord,
And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.”

Psalm 55:22

9. Comforts In Tribulation

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.  For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.  Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.  And our hope for you is steadfast because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-7

10. Don’t Be Entangled In The Yoke Of Bondage

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

Galatians 5:1

11. Don’t Be Intoxicated

“Woe to those who rise early in the morning,
That they may follow intoxicating drink;
Who continue until night, till wine inflames them!”

Isaiah 5:11

12. Do Not Let Sin Reign

“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”

Romans 6:12-13

13. Find Grace In Time Of Need

“Let us, therefore, come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Hebrews 4:16

14. Forgive One Another

“bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.”

Colossians 3:13

15. Lay Foundation On Jesus Christ

“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 3:11

16. Live By The Spirit

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

Romans 8:12-14

17. No Longer Slaves

“knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.”

Romans 6:6-7

18. Not To Be Brought Under The Power Of Anything

“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

1 Corinthians 6:12

19. Not To Be Slaves To Sin

“Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.”

“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”

Romans 6:14

21. Not To Set Minds On Earthly Things

“For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.”

Philippians 3:18-19

22. Obedience Leading To Righteousness

“Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves, slaves, to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness?”

Romans 6:16

23. Pray For Every Person Affected By The Addiction

“that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.”

1 Corinthians 12:25-26

24. Seek Counsel

“Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

25. Slaves Of Righteousness

“And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness”

Romans 6:18-19

26. Way Of Escape To Bear The Temptation

2 Peter 2:19

28. Will Not Walk In Works Of The Flesh

“Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Galatians 5:19-21

29. When Weak, To Be Strong

“And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
