How To Be Light

How To Be Light
How To Be Light

This post, How To Be Light forms part of our At His Feet Bible Study Series, and will shine His divine Light from Scripture on a few things that you perhaps did not know.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:14-16

How To Be Light

Jesus came to be a light to the world and is passing this privilege on to His disciples and followers.

“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 9:5

When we walk with Christ, we should walk in His footsteps on the path that He illuminated for us.

The wick of a candle cannot burn without the wax, and the wax will not melt without the wick.

The wick needs the wax, and the wax needs the wick.

We cannot be light-bearers for the Kingdom of God without a relationship with God to fill us with his love and light.

God’s desire is for His children to be light-bearers in a dark world to act as ambassadors for His Kingdom.

Characteristics Of Light

1. Light Is Revealing

When a room is dark you cannot see clearly what obstacles you may come across when you would just walk through it, but when you switch the light on you can see where the furniture is so you would not bump, trip, or fall when walking in the room.

The Light of Christ is revealing, His Light shows us what are the works of the darkness that should be avoided for us to be protected from the consequences of sin.

Also, nothing that is in the darkness will stay in the darkness but will come out in the light.

“For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.  Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.”

Luke 12:3

2. Light Guides

When traveling by night, and everything is pitch dark, the reflectors on the roads, and or street lights give us guidance on where to travel.

When ships sail at night they use technology like a GPS, but a lighthouse serves also as a guide to warn them that they are nearing the land.

When we are ingrafted in Christ and spend time with God in His Word, and prayer He will reveal to us what things to avoid.

Just like he led the Israelites with a pillar of clouds by day and fire by night, we can pray and trust Him to bestow upon us His divine guidance through His Holy Spirit to help us to walk in His Light.

3. Light Creates Awareness

When we sit in a lit room we are aware of our surroundings.

God wants us to create an awareness of His glory to others in everything we do in our daily lives and conduct.

He wants us to create an awareness in others of His presence and that they will be attracted through our light (unspoken testimony) to Him.

The fastest way we as God’s children can become polluted is through how we look at things and our thought processes.

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.  But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness?”

Matthew 6:22-23

How do you look at things in general?

Is your natural outlook on everything to be always mad, shifting blame to others, and being irritated?

Or do you experience peace and happiness and always trust God to give you the best outcome in everything?

When we walk in His Light and look at everything with faith and hope we will have light inside of us, if not, the darkness inside us will be great.

4. Light Is Silent

The light is quiet and does not make any noise.

We can win others for the Kingdom of God without words by being imitators of Christ in our daily conduct.

By observing us others will be drawn to Christ through His Light that is reflected through us.

“Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives”

1 Peter 3:1

5. Light Diminishes Darkness

When the light in the room is turned on the darkness is immediately gone.

Some people take this theory and say God’s children are light, and where they are there is no darkness, the darkness must go.

I do not agree with this.

However, I do believe that if we are clean vessels for Him and His light shines in and through us that we will not be overcome by the darkness around us in spiritual warfare.

“And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

John 1:5

Let’s Get Practical

Application

  • By spending time with God in His Word and prayer His Word will be a Lamp to our feet, and a Light to our path (Psalm 119:105).
  • That we will be a testimony without words to others (1 Peter 3:1).

Prayer points

  • Pray for God’s help and guidance to do all things without complaining and disputing so that you may be blameless before Him, and shine as lights in the world (Philippians 2:12-15).
  • Pray that God will reveal to you if you have any darkness in your perspective and thoughts on things, and then confess them as sin, and received His forgiveness (Matthew 6:22-23).

Promise

  • “Arise, shine;
    For your light has come!
And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.” Isaiah 60:1
  • Except for the privilege of carrying God’s light inside of us, and that He guides us and lit our path, we can know that when we receive eternal life we will always be in and surrounded by His Light because He is the Light in the Kingdom of God (Revelation 21:23).
