How To Stay In God’s Word

How To Stay In God’s Word

How To Stay In God’s Word is just a short article to explain the ‘why’ we must spend time in God’s Word as well as the ‘how’ to stay in God’s Word.

“For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.”

Hebrews 4:12-13 Christian Standard Bible

The ‘Why’ – What Are The Spiritual Benefits To Stay In God’s Word?

As a child of God, it is vitally important for you to stay in His Word otherwise you are doomed to failure in every part of your life.

As an intercessor, this was a learning process for me to sometimes put the prayers aside and spend more time in His Word.

1. You Become More Sensitive To The Voice Of The Holy Spirit.

This also has been a wonderful journey as it makes me more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit when He told me to rather just sit and relax and read the Bible.

As I explained in my previous writings that serving God and praying for your loved ones is not hard work nor difficult.

To stay in His Word, you need to make time to read and study it.

It is important to know His Word and ask Him to write it on the tablets of your heart, then when the occasion arises the Holy Spirit will remind you of a Scripture that applies to that situation.

Therefore, I love the Amplified Bible, The Passion Translation, and The Message so much because it explains so beautifully what everything means and makes it so much easier to understand.

Not only is the word of God: living, active, full of power but also operative, energizing, effective, and creative.  God created heaven and earth by words.

“So is my word that comes from my mouth; it does not return to me empty. Instead, it does what I want, and accomplishes what I intend.”

Isaiah 55:11 Common English Bible

2. The Holy Spirit Will Remind You Of Scripture.

When you spend time in His Word the Holy Spirit will also lay Scriptures on your heart which you can pray for that person or situation.

Then you can hold to the promise that God Himself said that His Word will not return to Him void but will accomplish for that which He sent it.

3. The Holy Spirit Will Expose Lies You Believed.

So many times, in my life something happened, and I felt instinctively the need to justify myself.

Then as I spend time in His Word it became sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of my soul and spirit (the completeness of my being), and of both joints and marrow (the deepest parts of my nature), exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of my heart.

I was blind to my own faults and wrongdoings and it was only the Word of God that could break through the barriers of lies and show me the naked truth.

When you spend time in God’s Word His Light will shine through all the darkness and lay the truth open before you.

There is no need to chastise yourself over it, but repent of it, ask His forgiveness and ask Him to lead and help you.

Many years ago, someone said something to me that was upsetting me.

Instead of bringing the matter to God, I repeat it to myself.  Yes, I do talk to myself especially when I am upset!

So, in my own conversations in my head, I added words and phrases that the person did not say, but I was starting to believe that she said it and I made myself very unhappy about it.

Then, when I started studying the Word, it was like someone turned the light switch on a dark night.

I saw the truth for what it was.  All the lies came crumbling down and I stare the naked truth in the face.

Still, it was not right nor acceptable what she told me, but it was not so bad as I told myself.

I believe that is why we must refrain from gossip because there are so many words, lies, and phrases added to the story and in the end is extremely far from the truth.

As you stay connected to Him in His Word ask Him to reveal lies to you that you believed were the truth and when He does, confess it and ask for His forgiveness.

Now believe that You are forgiven!

“Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love. Once again you will have compassion for us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!”

Micah 7:18-19 New Living Translation

4. Spending Time In His Word Will Help You To Discern Between Right And Wrong.

You will instinctively know what grieves the Holy Spirit and how to react or what to do rather than the wrong thing.

God is omnipresent and knows everything, nothing is hidden from Him and we can try to hide it from ourselves but can never hide from God.

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.”

Hebrews 4:13 New Living Translation

“For there is nothing hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come out into the open. So be careful how you listen; for whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a longing for truth], even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”

Luke 8:17-18 The Amplified Bible

The ‘How’ To Stay In God’s Word.

1. I Don’t Have Time!

Do not wait, start today!

I can understand that in today’s busy lives people do not have time for this, but the sad truth and reality is that if you don’t start somewhere you will never have time.

Start with just ten minutes of reading the Bible when you wake up or before going to bed, neither you nor anything in your life will ever be the same again.

When my program and daily tasks overwhelm me I read this scripture and it always encourages me to keep going, keep trying, and keep pushing forward.

“Go to work in the morning and stick to it until evening without watching the clock. You never know from moment to moment how your work will turn out in the end.”

Ecclesiastes 11:6 The Message

2. But I Don’t Understand The Bible

My youngest daughter also didn’t understand the Bible until we bought her The Message Bible. Since then she love comparing different translations that help her to understand the Scripture so much better.

You can read the Bible and different translations free on the You Version Bible app.

Additional benefits are that you can download the offline versions, listen to audio Scriptures, and follow Bible Reading Plans.

3. I Don’t Know Where To Start, Or What To Do.

There is no need to complicate this, let’s keep it simple. You can start with one of these suggestions:

  • Start with the book of John first, this is a beautiful book for new believers.
  • Start at Matthew and read every day a few chapters until you reach the end of Revelation.
  • Start at Genesis and read every day a few chapters until you reach the end of Revelation.
  • Read-only the book of Psalms a few chapters every day.
  • Read-only the book of Proverbs one chapter every day.

The Word of God is like a treasure chest filled with precious gems just waiting to be discovered.

Everything in this post is what I share from my own experience. I know there are a lot of other points I could share, but for now, I want to keep it simple.

It is my prayer you were blessed by this article, and if you are not already spending time in God’s Word, be inspired to do so.

Please share this article on social media to encourage others to spend time with God in His Word.

Everything in Him, unto Him, and to glorify His Holy Name!
